Polite Conversations | Del the Funkee Homosapien

{Photos by Mister Lee}

Had a small conversation with one of my favorites. We talked mostly about Parallel Uni-verses but I also got to know Del a bit more. There were several mic checks and the band started to play really loud so the conversation had to end abruptly. This was a great opportunity for Chainsaws and Jelly because Del won't be back in the east coast for a while. Other than that, happy reading!

                                                    Who is the Del?
Hard to get to know, hard to read most of the time. For the most part, I'm passionate and logical. I'm analytical but I'm also kind of jumpy. A positive thinker. What kind of drugs have you done? I used to do acid a lot, shrooms, and psychedelics like that. Obviously I used to smoke weed a lot. Not anymore? I've been through too much. I try to keep sober as much as I can because my mind is too wild. We are here at the Parallel Uni-verses listening party. How'd this album come about collaborating with Tame? I've known Tme for a while since '93 around the times we came out. I just had a kindred spirit with him. We were both party animals. Throughout the years, I've always respected his work and vice versa. We met up a couple years ago and we ended up going on the road with each other. Tame came up with the idea of Parallel Uni-verses. That's how it started. How would you describe the new album? I don't wanna put a label because it happened organically. It wasn't planned. We were addressing concerns that we had and thought were important. We built off from each other.

Would you say you have any similiarities?
Personality wise we compliment each other. The areas where we lived in were kind of hoodish. I don't want to be negative but if you could make it through that, then yeah. That's something both of us have as an influence.

What is hip hop to you?
It's more than hip hop, this is how I express myself. I'm always writing. If I don't do it for a while I get testy, people don't want to be around me because I don't have anywhere to put that energy. Pretty much adhered to the rules that was laid in the beginning. Still have to have your own style and skill.

You founded Hieroglyphics. The sound is considered undergound hip hop. Would you say you have that mentality as a "backpacker" and basically, "hate" on how hip hop has turned out to be?
I could understand how someone can hate on it because I used to be like that too. I used to be hating but afterwards I thought about it this way, I have nothing to do with how he sounds nor does he have anything to do with mine. He gets his money for what he do and I get my money for what I do. It's not like he's stealing money from me. It's cash flow. If you stick your hand out there you get some. I started concentrating on that instead on what others do. It's a waste of time. Being hateful just hurts yourself anyway. I understand people being like that because it's irritating but I have to remember that was me. Can't get too preachy because that was you!

How did you get involved with Plan B and the limited edition Hieroglyphics boards?
Skaters are down with our music and they appreciate our music. I've been doing a lot of work in the skateboard industry lately. When Plan B just started coming out with their skate videos, they used a lot of our music. Then they got large and asked if I would trip that they used our music. Nothing to trip about because they liked us. I appreciated they liked my shit.

Besides being a musician, do you have any other hobbies?
I used to draw a lot as well as graffiti. But I mostly spend a lot of time producing. I've studied music for 10 years and that's what I like doing most.

Aside from the Parallel Uni-verses album, what other projects do you have planned?
I've been working more on scoring. Right now I'm scoring the 3rd edition of the Skate video game.

Make sure to pick up Parallel Uni-verses by Tame One and Del the Funkee Homosapien on October 13 2009.
